Rachel & Marc's Contemporary Wedding at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA

North Adams, where MASS MoCA is situated, is nestled deep into the valley at the bottom of Mount Greylock; it’s a place we really enjoy visiting and the drama of driving into town is tough to overstate. Rachel’s great grandfather worked in the textile mill that would eventually become MASS MoCA and just west of town is Williams College where Rachel and Marc met, so having their wedding there felt like a lovely way to honor a bit of family history as well as a part of their own. Contrasting with the surrounding nature, the museum is incredibly industrial and imperfectly rough in a way that feels so fresh to photograph and it’s a favorite space of ours to work in.

After getting ready across the street Rachel and Marc first said hello to one another just around the corner from the museum’s main entrance. They briefly shared vows and from there we spent some time exploring the grounds together, finding spaces and light for some photos before guests started to arrive. While people began to pour into the Spencer Finch gallery for the ceremony, Rachel and Marc and their families and wedding party prepared against the backdrop of Sol Lewitt’s Wall Drawings as the light outside began to fade. The ceremony was gorgeous and Rachel and Marc looked so genuinely happy and excited to greet one another and get married in front of their guests. Striding proudly from the ceremony, they stepped outside into the cool evening air for another moment of calm before heading inside to see everyone.

Music courtesy of The Chicken Slacks reverberated through the halls of the museum as folks grabbed drinks and small bites, caught up with old friends and made new ones before sitting for dinner. The vibe was soulful and bluesy and felt just right between the contemporary art installations in every direction. A first dance, some toasts and a few courses of beautiful food courtesy of Blue Door Gatherings later folks were back on their feet grabbing a quick dessert before dancing. After a quick outfit change Rachel found Marc on her way to the dance floor and the band took turns soloing as folks cheered them on. As we walked back to our hotel room after saying bye to these two we couldn’t help but feel lucky to do what we do; Rachel and Marc are such kind and trusting people and spending the weekend with them and their guests was a treat.
