Katie & Alex's Wedding at Powder House Park & La Brasa in Somerville, MA

In stark contrast to last summer, where the temperatures were near record highs and there wasn’t a raincloud to be seen for months on end, this year has gotten off to quite a wet start. Last Saturday we awoke in Providence to torrential rain; not the thing you want as a photographer, and certainly not what Katie and Alex had hoped for. Through calls and texts with Olivia Brent, their exceptional coordinator, we kept an open line all morning so as to give them the best chance at the storm clearing, and around noon we got the final word: we were pushing forward with the outdoor ceremony plan. As we drove up to Somerville and arrived at their place we could see threatening clouds in every direction, but for whatever reason it wasn’t actually raining (despite our weather apps telling us it was!). At this point we’re not sure what’s going on but in the face of some of the most dramatically dark rain clouds in recent memory, Katie and Alex’s wedding day went off without a hitch. From the start of the day to the ceremony to the reception, not more than a few drops fell on us and it’s left us sort of scratching our heads. From expecting the worst to getting the best, we’ll just call ourselves lucky at this point and hope that luck doesn’t run out any time soon.

This wedding was focused on the things that meant the most to these two: their beloved neighborhood of Somerville (especially Powder House Park), a favorite restaurant of theirs (La Brasa), and absolutely killer tunes to dance to courtesy of White Label DJs (shoutout to Craig Harriman, who must be the best DJ we’ve ever heard at a wedding). Katie and Alex love good food, good music, and most of all just wanted to show off the place they’d settled into so lovingly to their favorite people, and they accomplished that with their wedding. It really felt like the first time they had had the opportunity to bring everyone they love together in one place and celebrate their relationship, and against the backdrop of what could have been quite a messy, rainy day, it worked out just fine. After sharing a delicious meal with their guests the evening really kicked off with expertly mixed dance songs that kept everyone, including us, in awe of the talent behind the DJ booth. From outside of La Brasa where we took a last few portraits of Katie and Alex before heading back to Providence, the cheers of friends and family mixed with muffled hits from the 80s bounced off the walls of neighboring buildings, and above through an absolutely clear sky the moon had risen.
