Maddie & Mark's Backyard Wedding in Burlington, VT

It’s always hard to tell just what a wedding day will look like. Will the weather cooperate, will things go to plan? Maddie and Mark relinquished control long ago when the pandemic proved persistent enough to disrupt their original plans at Shelburne Vineyards, forcing a smaller and more intimate gathering at Maddie’s parents’ home near Burlington, VT. Maddie and Mark, keen on remembering the day for what it was, insisted on chronicling what this September looked like in order to juxtapose it with their larger wedding next year. We appreciate that sort of honesty and acceptance of this reality, and rather than letting it be the worst part about the wedding make it a defining feature instead. A first look in the foyer, a quick ceremony in the front yard, confetti toss and toasts in the back, and a casual stroll around the corner to the lakeside beach felt just right (stumbling across a field of fluffy white flowers was a sweet bonus find along the way). For their trust and acceptance of whatever the universe had in store for their wedding day they were rewarded with earlier than usual peak foliage, a calm and cool breeze, and soft early fall light lasting through mid day and long into the evening. Brilliant oranges and yellows and reds colored the trees around Lake Champlain and made for a striking backdrop for their backyard wedding. Food made by the families served alongside floral arrangements courtesy of the ever talented Rita of Stitchdown Farm complimented each other wonderfully and truly made the yard feel like it was purpose built just for this occasion. With every wedding there is a certain degree of letting go, knowing that what will happen will just happen and Maddie and Mark stayed cool and calm throughout it all, clearly enjoying one another’s company above all else.
