Paige & Chris' Coastal Wedding in Montauk, NY

We had been looking forward to Paige and Chris’ wedding this past Saturday for so many reasons, not the least of which is that it was in a place neither of us had ever been before. Montauk is somewhere we’ve only known through film (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and arriving in the area the day before via ferry from Connecticut felt part familiar and part mysterious. The place has a certain indescribable feeling to it that’s tied up in how the light hits that narrow stretch of land, how there’s essentially one road to get everywhere, how it feels like the edge of the world, and being there in the last week of summer exacerbated that nostalgic haze. Starting the day at Montauk Manor, heading into town for the ceremony, afterwards to some bluffs further east, and finally settling at 360 Montauk Downs for the reception felt right, considering the circumstances. This was after all Paige and Chris’ back up to the back up plan, one that came with many twists and turns. I asked Chris on the day, after everything they went through to get to this point, what he was most nervous and excited for and his answer after some deliberation was “I guess I’m just so excited to see Paige.” This kind of sums up what drew us most to these two when we first met them; their clear and immensely strong connection that we saw in the way they looked at each other and how they lived to make one another laugh. Despite everything that went wrong in the world leading up to their wedding a lot went right on the day: not a cloud in the sky, a light breeze and perfectly pleasant mid-September temperatures made everyone focus on celebrating more than anything else. Between the impromptu dance parties all day, the random horse encounter near the beach, and incredible live music with views of the seemingly endless sunset, we couldn’t have asked for a better day. When the moon was high in the sky and it came time to leave the party we ran into that same stubborn question we asked ourselves when we first photographed these two last year in the East Village: do we really have to say goodbye now?
