Martha & Jayson's Northeast Kingdom Wedding at The Notch House in Westmore, VT
The Northeast Kingdom is a place near and dear to our hearts; there’s no place else like it in the country and it’s quietly majestic landscape is as beautiful as it is isolated. It also happens to be where Hannah’s from and where we got married in 2016 as such working there always brings with it a sense of homecoming. Martha and Jayson’s wedding earlier this month at The Notch House felt exactly like what we’ve come to expect from weddings in Vermont: light and weather you just don’t get where there aren’t mountains mixed with dramatic landscapes that make photographing there infinitely interesting. This particular wedding, however, was special to us for a couple of reasons: it fell three days before our own wedding anniversary and it was our first time collaborating with our dear friend Emily of AppleGate Florals. We’re obviously biased but we feel like you just can’t beat a wedding in early September in Vermont and Martha and Jayson’s was incredibly lovely.
When we first showed up to get the lay of the land we found Jayson and some pals preparing to take a dip in the lake while Martha and friends got ready upstairs in the main house. Inside the place dripped with old Vermont charm, so full of character and honest wear from years of use since it’s construction in 1860, and as Martha finished getting ready Jayson made his way up to see her for the first time. Once they were together the two of them were all smiles, happy to be heading into the rest of the day with one another. Their ceremony, with musical accompaniment and officiating courtesy of Jayson’s groomsmen, was lighthearted and sweet while cocktail hour outside the gorgeous timber framed barn felt like the perfect way to enjoy the changing of the seasons.
After a quick stop by the lake to take in the cool evening air coming off the water, the reception kicked off with toasts from parents and friends. Guests were urged by Jayson’s father to take home one of the ~150 mugs he hand made as wedding favors and enjoy their signature drink, hot toddies, in them. Before long people were on the dance floor in force, dancing to an uncommonly well mixed set of tunes from all ends of the musical spectrum. As the evening wore on the weather turned and a downpour started that would last until after we left for the night, but this sort of added to the vibe. If people got too hot dancing their socks off, a quick jump out into the rain was all it took to cool off and get back to it. Ultimately, Martha and Jayson’s wedding felt like the best excuse to get back to the part of the country where we got married during our absolute favorite time of year. Their wedding day was so full of kindness and love and we will be forever grateful to share an anniversary week with them.
