Kate & Matt's Winter Wedding at the Round Barn Inn in Waitsfield, VT
We had the good fortune to meet most of Kate and Matt’s friends and family at a wedding last September, so in a way this was a bit of a reunion wedding for us. These two and all of their friends are such a welcoming bunch and it’s hard to quantify just what the goofy, fun-loving atmosphere amongst them does to our ability to capture the day. There’s a special kind of brutal beauty to Vermont in February, and while we had no idea what the weather would end up looking like we knew it would likely be dramatic. What started as rainy sleet turned eventually to snow, which then broke away into a dramatic sunset before another wave of cloud cover rolled in for the rest of the night. Kate and Matt couldn’t have cared less about the drama outside, however, and were entirely set in the moment of getting married.
The venue, which hosted most of the guests as well as the ceremony and reception in an absolutely gorgeous repurposed round barn, encouraged cuddling together and embracing the coziness of the space. After an intimate ceremony in the lower level, guests trekked upstairs to the reception area that featured massively vaulted ceilings, lovely old wood floors, and enough string lighting to bask the rest of the evening in a warm romantic glow, contrasting the brisk cold just outside.
Despite the resounding goofiness, there was such a deep love and respect for Kate and Matt, representing relationships that span decades in more cases than not. Toasts from friends recalled memories from childhood, their first beers together, the moment the two of them met, a story from each stage of youth it seemed. A common thread between all of them though was how certain Matt and Kate were about being together, something that was as clear to their friends as it was to us behind the camera. It’s hard to write about this reception without mentioning the latest performance of the “Shred-Heads,” Matt’s air-guitar troupe consisting of at least four of his closest friends. If that wasn’t enough, Matt’s mom stepped up for a cameo appearance, shredding her own broomstick before we packed up for the night. It was absolutely the cherry on top of this wedding, and it left us with stupid smiles across our faces as we drove home through muddy back roads.
