Maggie & Christian's Windy Wedding at The Skinner Barn in Waitsfield, VT
When Maggie and Christian first described their wedding plans to us almost a year ago, our thoughts went first to our own wedding. An outdoor ceremony under Vermont skies in the waning days of summer is something very familiar to us and immediately made us excited to photograph their wedding. When we arrived in the Mad River Valley last weekend we were met with visibly heavy clouds and light drizzling rain, again not dissimilar to the morning of our own wedding. That may be our favorite part about photographing weddings in Vermont: though it can be rather anxiety inducing, the weather is always dramatic and keeps us on our toes! Maybe it was just the slight change in color in the trees as we drove to the wedding site, maybe it was the low 60º temperatures that morning, or perhaps it was Maggie’s mustard color shawl contrasted with the rich blue of Christian’s suit, but this wedding truly felt like an ode to the beginning of fall. From the moment Maggie and Christian first saw each other to the last moments of dancing these two couldn’t keep their eyes off of one another. During their wedding we witnessed some of the sweetest, most hilarious vows, momentarily interrupted by a small flock of geese on final approach to the pond behind the ceremony site, perfectly captured the relationship between them. Unique to Maggie and Christian’s wedding was their decision to share their first dance with one another away from their wedding guests. It wasn’t just the Iron & Wine song floating upwards towards the rafters, this was genuinely one of the most touching moments of the entire day and we were honored to photograph it. After a quiet moment alone Maggie and Christian welcomed guests inside to share candlelit family style meals cooked over open flame by The Hindquarter and indulge in Cold Hollow Cider Mill donuts before opening the dance floor up for consecutive dance offs. There’s definitely something special about packing all of your most favorite people into such a beautiful place and filling it with light, music, and celebration, and we could absolutely get used to those donuts.
