Cat & Ryan's Backyard Wedding in Litchfield, CT

Sometimes it can feel as though the universe is trying to throw everything it can at you, all at once. For Cat and Ryan the pandemic, a summer rain squall, even a stubborn nose bleed all came together last Saturday at their backyard wedding to test their resolve. For us it was Hannah’s sprained ankle that prevented her from joining me on our first full wedding of the year, though luckily our dear friend Sarah of Two Of Us Photography was able to come down from Vermont last minute to help out in her absence. From the moment I arrived in the pouring rain to the time I left later that foggy evening, Cat and Ryan remained admirably positive and determined not to be overwhelmed by the circumstances. Laughing and joking and smiling through the wet, I was consistently impressed with their up for anything attitude and cheeriness despite getting absolutely soaked. We knew that would be the case though, after speaking often over the past year, that these two cared first and foremost about marrying one another, not necessarily how it happened. After having to cancel on their venue at a nature conservatory not far from Cat’s childhood home in Connecticut due to COVID, the decisions were made to host a much smaller and more intimate wedding at home instead. What resulted was a wedding that focused intensely and directly on the bond between Cat and Ryan, one strengthened by years of long-distance dating, full of patience and appreciation for one another. If we learned one thing from these two it was that if you stay focused on what really matters there is no need to get too upset about any one obstacle. Challenges will present themselves one way or another, and you can either throw in the towel or you can wring the rainwater from your dress, swap your tie for a fresh one, and get married anyways.
